St. Petersburg, Florida - Hair extensions are becoming more and more popular with women who don't want to wait for their hair to grow out, or who want to add fullness.
In the case of Drake Ondrovic, her hair had been so over-processed at another salon, it simply wouldn't grow.
Drake Ondrovic, Client:
"My hair is very, very, very thin and very, very, very fine, and it couldn't take the abuse. Bottom line."
She turned to Karen Hicks and her salon appropriately called The Hair Hospital. Karen is on a mission to educate women about the dangers of extensions or color when applied by someone without the proper training.
Karen Hicks, "The Hair Hospital":
"We're seeing dramatic damage to the hair which is not the extensions fault, but it's the installers fault. So if you don't have both a good quality product and a knowledgeable technician, then you can end up with disasters."
She showed us pictures of the damage that can be done when extensions aren't applied correctly. Karen says, "I've seen situations where people have lost 50 percent of their hair."
Dawn Abbott has her own horror story to tell about the extensions she received at another salon.
Dawn Abbott, Client:
"I liked it very much initially. The hair started to mat and become unmanageable."
It got so bad it took two of her friends to comb it out one day.
New extensions at Karen's salon corrected the problem. Dawn says, "I curl my hair now. I could put a comb through it right now with no problem. A brush. I can sleep on it without matting. I don't have to braid it to sleep in it."
