SEVERAL hair and beauty salons in and around Bridlington have passed health and safety spot-checks by council inspectors.

They have been given a national award after passing criteria such as cleanliness and methods to prevent occupational ill health in employees.

East Riding College is also celebrating after its hair and beauty salons both passed the test, becoming the first colleges in the country to achieve the level.

Chris Dunnachie, senior environmental health officer for East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "In my experience, many busy salons often find that they are not fully compliant with current health and safety legal requirements.

"Inspections often identify common issues such as slip and trip hazards, a general lack of cleaning brushes and clippers between clients, not using separate spatulas for waxing, a lack of simple and safe practices to prevent occupational dermatitis and stylists not following suppliers' guidelines on skin patch testing before customers undergo hair colouring to preventing allergic reactions."

Coun Jane Evison, the council's portfolio holder for public protection, said: "I am pleased so many East Riding salon owners have ensured their practices ensure good employee and customer safety.

"I would encourage other salon owners to contact the council for the necessary advice to achieve similar recognition next year."

The Bridlington salons which have been given the award are: Headstart Hair Design; The Color; Mayfair Salon; Impressions 2; Upperkuts; Simply Hair & Beauty; Zone 1; Neville Michael; Nicola's Hair Studio; A Cut Above; Fellas; JB's; Le Visage Beauty Salon; Images of Hair and Impressions, in Flamborough.
