BURGLARS who broke into a Stansted hair salon left the owners angry and confused after fleeing with the unusual booty of scissors, shampoo and peroxide dye.
The raiders, who also made off with a small amount of petty cash, struck at Lino Thomas in Cambridge Road on Wednesday night last week, breaking in at the back of the building and ransacking the interior.
Tracy Bottalico, whose husband Lino runs the salon, was appalled by the crime.
"We had to cancel a whole morning's worth of clients as a result," she said.
"I was furious that someone could, by stealing the tools that allow him to work, take away my husband's livelihood like that. It's a total lack of respect for other people's property, unbelievable."
She was surprised that the burglars had taken such specialist items and said: "It's obvious they will be selling it on to somebody. I would just ask people to think about what they're buying and the misery caused to the victims of theft."
The raid was discovered by one of the younger members of the salon's 12 staff.
Mrs Bottalico said: "The staff were really shocked. It was really horrible for all of them to have to experience something like this."
It is not the first time the salon has been targeted by criminals. Mrs Bottalico said: "About six weeks ago we had a drunken youth kick in the front door, which is appalling. I want people to realise this is going on in Stansted.
"We have lived here a long time and the village is not a very nice place to be at the moment.
"We don't think we are being targeted particularly. We don't have anyone bearing a grudge. We just think we have been unlucky and that's just the way it is."
The salon was out of action for just a morning and Mrs Bottalico thanked customers for being so understanding. She added that security had been beefed up at the premises.
Anyone with information about the break-in is asked to contact police at Dunmow on (01376) 556242.
