The sun can really do a number on your hair, especially in the summer; but maintaining your mane doesn't have to cost a fortune.
Philadelphia hairstylist Tim Nork says the secret to making perfect pigment last longer is the way the color is applied.
"It's called 'biolage,'" Nork explains. "It just gives you a natural feel. You usually go a little thinner at the roots -- that way the growing out process is easier."
As a result, the highlights are easier to maintain -- and require fewer trips to the salon.
"Because you're not foiling directly to the root, " Nork adds, "you're not making strong lines against the natural hair color."
When trying to find that perfect hair color for the summer, Nork says less is more: Bold, chunky highlights are pass?; subtle shades are in.
To help keep your color looking good in between those trips to the salon, Nork recommends investing in those new color-depositing shampoos. "They have a little bit of color in the shampoo and conditioner."
Some other shampoos, like Brilliant Brunette Light Reflecting products, promise to make your color shine - without adding any extra dyes.
If you really need to get to the root of your hair problem, Ruth Wilkins-Berryman of Douglas Cosmetics suggests trying The Mixer Root Touch-Up. "This is that product that you'll use in case of an emergency," Wilkins-Berryman explains, "and it'll actually take you to your next color appointment!"
All you need to do is apply the product right at those out-of-control roots, comb it through and wash it out.
