Hollywood, I've been told, has fallen in love with bangs.
So sayeth celebrity stylist Ted Gibson, who has a line of hair-care products and styling tools at select Saks Fifth Avenue locations and www.saks.com .
A-listers from coast to coast have been spotted on the red carpet sporting some fringe, a hot hair trend that's on the rise. And Ted is dedicated to making sure women everywhere know how to pull off this modern blunt-bank look.
"It can be adorable on 10-year-olds, but it can look juvenile and outdated on adults," Ted told me. (Actually, that's a lie -- a press release told me. But for the sake of flow and stuff, just go with me.)
The key to the cut is the asymmetrical length of the bang, Ted said. The middle part should be the shortest with the sides a bit longer. It's all about framing the face, and emphasizing eyes and cheekbones.
Here are some bang-up tips:
--This look is especially flattering on heart-shaped and round faces -- including gorgeous Christina Ricci, over whose tresses Ted recently toiled.
*
Make sure your stylist cuts your bangs shorter in the middle and longer on the ends.
--Fringe looks stunning with bold hair color, like dark brown, jet black, platinum or fiery red. C'mon, go for it!
--To style, blow-dry with a hair dryer and a flat brush for a straight look. The Ted Gibson Professional Hair Dryer, for example, uses nano technology that allows hair to dry faster without damaging it or causing static electricity ($275).
--Run a flat iron over the bangs. The beveled edges of Ted's new flat iron allow you to curl the end of the bangs under ever-so-slightly ($225).
--Finish with hairspray for a light hold with maximum shine. Ted's Beautiful Hold Hairspray is light-hold and has a really nice gardenia smell ($32, shown here).
--Hair should be straight and shiny for a polished, sophisticated and done look.
A final tip from Ted: If you're plagued with broken hair, spray hairspray on a comb and run the comb lightly through bangs. This will hold down little broken fly-aways for a super sleek result.

J. Spencer is hosting two trunk shows of Firefly jewelry this week -- one at each of its Tulsa boutiques.
Firefly is a brilliantly colored line of jewelry designed and made in Guatemala. This year, its young designer, 19-year-old Juan Carlos Chavajay won the worldwide Swarovski Crystal Design Competition at the Tuscon Gem Show.
The pieces are mosaic beaded creations in colors that reflect the heritage of his native country. Judy Irvine, a sales rep from Firefly, will be at both stores with the collection.
Get this: Customers will receive a 10 percent discount on all Firefly jewelry purchased during the trunk show, as well as a free gift with a $150 purchase.
You can see Firefly from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the 8323 S. Memorial Drive location (call 250-5587), then 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Friday at the Utica Square store (749-2919).
John Daniel Footwear at the Plaza, 81st Street and Lewis Avenue, will host an Allen Edmonds trunk show through Saturday.
Virtually all of the Allen Edmonds line is made in the United States, mostly in Maine or Wisconsin. And all their shoes are crafted from premium calf leather, which is soft and supple.
One advantage to Allen Edmonds shoes (below) is the wide range of sizes they manufacture -- 6 to 16, and widths AAA to EEE.
During the show, John Daniel will have samples of all the styles produced by Allen Edmonds for customers to special order them, which takes approximately two weeks for delivery.
Shown here, the Leyland slip-on and Delray, both of which come in chili and black.
For more info, call John Daniel at 299-6208.
Mary Ruby at KingsPointe Village, 61st Street and Yale Avenue, is hosting a fall trunk show of Windridge by Cheryl Nash from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.
Windridge is kinda close to the store's City Girl line. The show will feature more than 150 pieces among eight groupings for fall, complete with sweaters, slacks and jackets, in fabulous colors and fabrics. Sizes range from this updated missy collection range from 4 to 18.

And Pavilion at Utica Square will host the fall/winter trunk show of Votre Nom from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday.
This classic, upscale line hails from Paris, the store's lovely Lucy told me. Things to look for are the microfiber suitings and fabulous jackets for work or play (above). And a Votre Nom rep will be on hand to help you select some must-have pieces for your autumn wardrobe.
Oh, did I mention you'll get a 10 percent discount on Votre Nom during the trunk show only?

Fab find of the week
Finding a masculine diaper bag seems about as likely as riding a butch unicorn.
But to the rescue comes Chris Pegula and his Diaper Dude bags, a perfect first Father's Day gift.
A dad himself, Pegula developed this awesome tote (top, right), which comes in camouflage -- nothing froufrou, flowery or, in summation, embarrassing for men.
Made of durable nylon, it features an ergonomic, across-the-chest design that saves your shoulders; wide, adjustable strap with padded panel that clips open and closed for easy on and off; padded back for extra comfort against your body; three exterior zip-closed pockets perfect for wipes, bibs, food and more; easy-to-reach elasticized bottle pocket; removable, on-strap cell phone pouch; large inner compartment with zip-closed pocket, plus pouch for diapers and clip for keys. A padded changing pad is included, as well as two large elasticized slots in back.

Squeeze those creative juices, ladies. J. Jill is hosting its second annual "Nature of Compassion" T-shirt design contest.
Aspiring artists are invited to submit their original artwork depicting inspira tional elements of nature to J. Jill. A team of J. Jill designers and executives will select 10 finalists, and then customers will choose their favorite designs by voting online at www.jjill.com or any J. Jill store nationwide July 16-31. J. Jill has two Tulsa locations: Utica Square and Woodland Hills Mall.
The winning design will be featured on a long-sleeve, limited-edition tee to be sold in J. Jill stores, catalogs and online this holiday season for just $24.50. All profits from the sale of the tee will be donated to the Compassion Fund, which helps poor and homeless women.
You better hurry, though -- original T-shirt designs should be submitted by May 28 either at J. Jill stores or online. Designs should contain elements of nature and can be created with any medium, except photography.
The winning design will be announced on or by Nov. 1, with each of the nine finalists receiving a $500 shopping spree at J.Jill. The grand-prize winner receives a $1,000 J. Jill shopping spree, as well as an artistic getaway for herself and a friend to Artista Creative Safaris for Women in Carmel-By-The-Sea, Calif.
For official contest rules, visit www.jjill.com.
The L word
For future reference, when I have random stuff to tell y'all, I'm going to put it at the end of this column -- I call it "lagniappe," which means "a little somethin' extra" down where I'm from in Mississippi and Louisiana.
First off, a Tulsa World editor shared a secret with me recently. When applying self-tanner, don't waste your time waiting to get dressed -- just use a hairdryer on your skin to speed things up without any mess.
Finally, have you heard Rufus Wainwright's newest CD, "Release the Stars"? It has a song about Tulsa called -- quel surprise -- "Tulsa."
It's an interesting listen, from the opening line of, "You taste like potato chips in the morning" to something about an antique shop he hopes to visit upon his return here. Anyone ever seen Ruf out and about on Cherry Street? Definitely let me know so I can get a disposable camera and hang out at Panera.
