Louis Holmes' new hair color - fire red - could be symbolic of his play in spring workouts.
The defensive end is on fire, Arizona football coaches say.
"Louis is having a great, great spring," defensive end coach Joe Robinson said. "The game is so much easier because he understands the scheme."
Holmes, a 6-foot-6, 270-pound senior-to-be, recently dyed his hair red.
"I woke up, and it was like this," he said.
Holmes not only has a dry sense of humor, but he also enjoys experimenting with new hairdos. Before last season, he shaved an "A" into his hair.
The Wildcats want a little different player than a year ago.
Holmes, a transfer from Scottsdale Community College, had 36 tackles, four sacks and five tackles for losses last season.
But going into the season, he was hyped as much as a McDonald's All-American for Lute Olson's basketball team.
"Last year, Louis was trying to use his ability, but he was thinking about stepping here, looking there," Robinson said. "Now it is more natural to him. He looks pretty good right now."
